Revelation 2:18-19

Revelation 2:18-19- Church in Thyatira

Revelation 2:18-19 – The Church praised for their way of life

  • 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;
  • 19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

Revelation 2:20-24 – I have a few things against thee

  • 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
  • 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
  • 22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
  • 23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
  • 24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

Revelation 2:25-29 You already hold fast

  • 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.
  • 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
  • 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
  • 28 And I will give him the morning star.
  • 29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Revelation 2:18-19

The city of Thyatira was a business and trade center

  • The city of Thyatira was so small, there are no church records.
  • Some say that Thyatira didn’t even exist.
  • Others say perhaps it was not a Church but instead, a time 600AD-1500AD – The Dark Ages.
  • Regardless – Jesus had John write to this Church for a reason.
  • So, today, it is a message we must also read and have an ear to hear.

18 John is explaining to the Church of Thyatira that it is the Son of God (himself) that is dictating the note.

  • Jesus is dictating and John is only penning the note as directed.
  • Jesus describes his own divine nature:
  • Eyes – Jesus has penetrating eyes that see everything (even the hidden things).
  • Feet – brass – refined by fire, pure and strong.

19 The Church are praised for their works, love, service, faith, patience.

  • Jesus praises the church for their works two times in verse 19.
  • Even though they may have been small, (who or whatever they were) – Jesus knows what they have been doing.
  • Perhaps the first time “works” is mentioned, He was saying I have seen all the works (good and bad) you have been doing.
  • And then when using the word works a second time, he was speaking of the more commendable works they were now doing, as they were growing.

The last more than the first.

  • They had retained what they began with and then continued to grow in grace and in the love of Jesus and in their works.
  • Most Churches over time lose the fire they start with, but this Church had kept the fire and it had grown even more as time went on.
  • Apparently, to keep the fire going and continue to grow is a rare find in a Church!

20 Then they are told that Jesus has a few things against them.

  • They are told to repent for allowing Jezebel a “prophetess” into their Church.
  • Jesus tells them she is not even a prophetess, even though the Church has accepted her as one.

Jesus tells them the specific things she is doing, which is unacceptable to God, yet the Church is allowing.

  • Promoting sexual immorality.
  • Encouraging them to eat things sacrificed to idols.

21-22 Before Jesus tells the Christians in Thyatira what they must do; He first tells them what He will do.

  • Jesus tells the Christians in Thyatira that He gave Jezebel a chance to repent and she ignored him.
  • Because they have allowed this sin inside the Church, Jesus will make her and all those who follow her, sick.
  • Jesus will chastise this Jezebel and cast her into a sickbed, along with those who commit adultery with her.
  • Perhaps an affliction upon those who follow Jezebel will bring them to repent!

23 Jesus continued with how he will chastise the Jezebel.

  • I will kill Jezebel’s children with death!
  • He was speaking of the 2nd death.
  • “All men die, but all are not killed with death”.
  • This 2nd death means that Jezebel and all who follow her will be cast into the Lake of Fire at the end of times.
  • They will enter eternal death and no eternal life.
  • We all need to make sure we are not following a person like this Jezebel.
  • And if we are, repent!

24-26 Those who overcome until the end will be given power over the nations

The Christians in Thyatira who overcome until the end will be given power over the nations.

  • Power over the nations in order to dash them to pieces with a rule of a rod of iron.
  • They will also be given the “morning star.”
  • Jesus gives Christians the reward of being rulers along side of Him and are given the promise of eternal life with Him.
  • Rod of iron – In the millennial kingdom Jesus will rule and those against him will not be tolerated but killed.

27-29 Message is given to all Churches throughout history.

  • Notice this message is not just given to this one Church of Thyatira, but to churches, (plural) throughout history.
  • Everyone needs to read all the letters that were written to the churches.
  • Stay faithful, stand strong in Jesus until he comes again and raises us to life eternal.
  • We must take heed to the warnings.
  • Further more, open the ears of our heart and receive Jesus in His fullness.
